Introducing the Asian-Originated Double Cleansing Technique

Originating in Asia, double cleansing is a two-step routine that involves breaking down makeup, SPF, and daily grime on the skin's surface before a second cleanse removes impurities from deep within your pores. Japan and Korea are credited as the founding fathers of double cleansing.

According to reports, Japanese geishas used cleansing oils followed by a foamy cleanser to remove their white makeup. This technique also became popular as part of the Korean 10-step skincare regime, which has gained popularity in Western culture in recent years.

What is Double Cleansing (2-step face washing)?

Double cleansing does not mean washing your face twice with soap bubbles. Instead, it is a process of cleansing the face in two steps: first with oil and then with water.

First, you use a makeup remover oil to eliminate makeup, excess oil, dirt, and sunscreen from your face. Then, you use a water-based cleanser to wash your face. Now, your skin is ready to be nourished.

Why do you need two types of products?

The double cleansing method is based on basic chemical principles. Oil and water do not mix according to chemical thinking. Water-based cleansers alone cannot effectively remove oil-based cosmetics from the skin. Only oil-based makeup removers can do this. After the oil-based makeup remover separates these chemicals from the skin, the cleanser can effectively do its job.

The step of removing makeup with oil helps not only fight acne but also combat aging. Residue from cosmetics, excess oil, and dead skin can clog pores, leading to inflammation, pus, or acne. Moreover, they can become free radicals that damage the skin through oxidation. This can promote wrinkles, cause melamine imbalances resulting in freckles, and damage the skin's elastic collagen layer. Therefore, the step of removing makeup with oil is vital.

Additionally, the process of removing makeup with oil-based products is gentler. There is no need to vigorously rub the skin to remove makeup, as excessive rubbing can contribute to premature wrinkles.

How to do it?

Whether you choose a liquid makeup remover or an oil-based makeup remover for travel, the steps to clean your skin are similar:

  1. Apply a sufficient amount of makeup remover oil to dry hands and massage it onto your face. Pay special attention to the T-zone, around the nose, and mouth where excess oil is secreted.

  2. Let the oil soak into the skin for 2-3 minutes.

  3. Use facial cotton or a warm towel to wipe away the oil. Warm towels are preferred as warmth helps open pores, making makeup removal more effective.

  4. Use a facial cleanser and continue washing your face as usual. Use cold water at this stage to tighten pores.

  5. Finally, nourish your skin as usual.

At first glance, the 2-step makeup removal process may seem time-consuming. However, after performing it several times, you will realize that it is not as complicated as it seems.

So, who is not suitable for Double Cleansing?

The 2-step facial cleansing process is suitable for dry, combination, or oily skin. However, individuals with sensitive skin should consult a dermatologist before proceeding. Sensitive skin tends to react easily when exposed to harsh makeup remover chemicals.

According to beauty experts, it is recommended to spend at least 60 seconds washing your face. This is the minimum time required for the active ingredients in the facial cleanser to have a positive impact on your skin. Additionally, washing your face slowly enables you to focus on often overlooked areas, such as the hairline and corners of the mouth. Lastly, massaging with oil can also improve blood circulation, promoting relaxation and skin regeneration.
